The Candyman director Nia DaCosta becomes the first Black female director to debut a movie in No.1. weekend spot at the domestic box office. The movie also made history as it grosses over $20.4m at the box office making it the first by an African-American female director. Candyman is a 2021 American supernatural slasher film directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, and DaCosta. The film is a direct sequel to the 1992 film of the same name and the fourth film in the Candyman film series, based on the short story “The Forbidden” by Clive Barker.

DaCosta is also the first black woman and youngest filmmaker to direct the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel scheduled to be released November 11th 2022.
