The 2021 Oscar Awards saw women winning across new and highly visible categories than ever before. Some of these categories were also first of its kind in the history of Oscar.

For the 2021 winners, Jan Pascale won best set decorator for the movie Mank; Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson made history as the first African-American winners in the categories of Makeup and hairstyling for the movie Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom; Michelle Couttolenc won best sound for the movie Sound of metal; Dana Murray won best animated feature for the movie Soul; Alice Doyard won in the documentary short category for the movie Colette; and Pippa Ehrlich winning the Best Documentary feature category for the movie My Octopus teacher.

This goes to say that 2021 brought about an improved appreciation towards women in film in the Oscars award.
